The Centre for Applied Jungian Studies hosts Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. as she presents on the topic of her newest book, The Shadows of the Psyche; Predators of Self-deception, Envy Sirens and Demon Lovers (2027).
Susan is a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst, author, frequent Jungian-themed podcast guest, and YouTube personality.

“It is a matter of unwrapping the illusory, deceptive characters,
deadly in one way or another,
obstructing the real.
From this process,
we learn to think differently about ourselves and others
in the struggle to manifest our potential."

-Susan Schwartz

Our minds contain a vast universe of nuances and secrets to be unraveled.
Yet, we are limited by the decay from self-deception lying in the shadows, unconscious, and taking us off our path.
These come in the forms of demon lovers and envy sirens, addictions and compulsions, drawing to self-deception, and distorting reality.
Deception divides self-knowledge in the web of internal saboteurs and shadow complexes.
This presentation explores the fascism of the mind, touting rigid, superficial, and collective narcissistic responses to the current anxieties, threats, and terrors.

A case example from Jungian analytical thought and treatment illustrates this unconscious deceptive pull, conscious awareness of the shadow and complex, and the reality of the psyche. The treatment steps to foster growth and development become more immanent and important as our world descends into chaos.

"He simply will not and cannot admit that he is what he is;
he cannot endure his own guilt,
just as he could not help incurring it.
He will stoop to every kind of
self-deception if only he can escape the sight of himself."

-C. G. Jung CW 10 par. 417

The presentation will consist of a slideshow and a Q&A.
