About the Centre of Applied Jungian Studies

by Stephen

As far as we can discern the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being – C. G. Jung

The goal of the Centre is to make Jungian psychology accessible to all. To provide a platform and means of study outside of analysis, analytical training and academia.  We focus on teaching Jungian psychology as a practical, accessible, and real tool of transformation.

What we do not do is offer analysis nor training for the aspiring analyst. These are the domains of the duly appointed institutions and analysts.

Jungian psychology is a fairly unique system of psychology in that it is ideally suited to the ‘healthy psyche’. The focus of Jung’s work whilst not ignoring pathologies went far beyond pathology into the areas of personal destiny, self expression, self knowledge and meaning.

The principle goal of the Jungian journey is to find yourself, who you authentically are independently of what you have been told to believe about who you are. And so equipped, to discover the possibility of expressing this authentic self in the world, the realisation your optimum destiny or what Jung called individuation.

The Centre’s principle medium of teaching is through half and full day modules. These modules are focused on providing an introduction to Jung’s central or ‘signature’ ideas. These modules are taught monthly in Johannesburg and quarterly in Durban and Cape Town.

For more information on the modules: half day and full day workshops

We also offer a master class which is about the application of Jungian theory, increasing consciousness, learning to think psychologically and ultimately individuation. The master class has a limited capacity and is ongoing; consequently admission is on application and circumstances may mean being placed on a waiting list. The master class is held in Johannesburg and takes place during the evening once every two weeks. In order to make the teaching in the master class more widely accessible the master class is available as a podcast and this is offered completely free.

Usually access to Jung’s work is reserved for those who are able and inclined to enter analysis, or for those exceptional and privileged enough to spend many years studying the Collected Works (20 volumes) and the last eighty years of Jungian and Post Jungian literature, in other words – the privileged few.

Our method of delivery is neither academic nor esoteric, focusing instead on the practical application of Jung’s work in the student’s life for the purposes of personal transformation, increasing consciousness and individuation. This is not meant to reduce the depth and complexity, nor subtlety of Jung’s opus and in no way denigrates the invaluable work provided by Jungian analysts around the world. We stress that the teaching and facilitation offered in not of a clinical nature and is not a substitute for those requiring or seeking analysis.

Jung’s work is amongst the most potent, deeply mysterious and radical systems of thought developed during the 20th century. He truly deserves the title of Gnostic Alchemist.
